Batching Cold Brew Flavors for Grab-and-Go
Opening Pour
Most people think of cold brew as a single drink — smooth, cold, maybe a little sweet. But once you start brewing it at home with any regularity, you realize it's something more than that. Cold brew is a system. And once you see it that way, everything about how you use it changes.
When you batch cold brew well, you're not just making coffee. You're creating flexibility — for hosting, for your daily rhythm, for travel, for the mornings when you need something good and you need it now.
My Cold Brew Origin Story
I fell in love with coffee in Guatemala while serving in the mission field. When I came home, I knew I wanted to make better coffee — but I didn’t know espresso, didn’t own fancy gear, and honestly didn’t know where to start.
I remember the thought that pushed me to figure it out: If a minimum-wage 17-year-old barista at Starbucks can make a decent iced caramel macchiato, surely I can do better than that at home.
So I started with cold brew. I learned the ratios. I built a simple system. I kept mason jars of cold brew lattes in my fridge — different flavors, different styles — basically meal-prepping my coffee for the week before that was even a phrase people used. Before Crown Brew ever existed, I was known at work and among friends as the guy with the mason jar iced latte in his lunchbox. Hosting became easy without even trying. I’d tell people, “Grab whatever jar you want from the fridge.”
That ease is what I love about cold brew. You can make a week’s worth of coffee in one go, try eight different drinks from a single batch, take it on a road trip, or cater a brunch with almost no effort on the day. It is one of the most generous brewing methods there is.
One Batch. Endless Possibilities.
When we brew cold brew at home using our Toddy system, we end up with enough concentrate to make 8–10 drinks from a single batch. From there, it’s plug-and-play.
Black Cold Brew- equal parts concentrate and water. Clean, balanced, and endlessly drinkable.
Cold Brew Lattes- equal parts concentrate and milk, with 30–40g of whatever syrup or flavor you love.
Cold Brew Tonics / Sodas- equal parts concentrate and sparkling water, finished with citrus, herbs, or a little sweetness.
One batch can easily turn into a fridge full of options — without brewing again.
Mason Jars: The Ultimate Cold Brew Hack
I still love a mason jar for cold brew, and I don't think that will ever change. Coffee, milk, flavor, lid on — shake it like a cocktail shaker, add ice, done. It functions as an all-in-one mixing vessel, storage container, and drinking glass. There is something deeply satisfying about a system that simple.
Simple systems scale. That's true at the café level, and it's just as true at home on a Tuesday morning.
Why Cold Brew Wins for Hosting
Cold brew has a 10 to 14 day fridge life, which is remarkable in the coffee world. That stability and longevity means one well-timed batch can serve a slow weekday morning, a busy weekend with guests, a road trip, a brunch spread, and a fridge your friends can help themselves from — all from the same pour. For hosting in particular, there is almost no brewing method that offers that kind of return on a single hour of preparation.
A Quick Note on Gear
At home — and in our café — we use the Toddy Home Cold Brew System because it scales beautifully, stays consistent, and produces café-quality concentrate without fuss. It’s the same system we trust at scale, just sized perfectly for home use.

Tips from a Barista
I’m writing this newsletter from a hotel in Chicago — and there’s a 64oz jug of cold brew in my mini fridge that I brought with me. I never leave home for more than a day without cold brew tagging along for the journey.
If you’re heading out on a road trip, vacation, or spending a weekend at family’s house with a busted drip pot, batch enough cold brew ahead of time, jar it up, and throw it in a cooler.
Cold brew lets you take café-quality, ready-to-drink coffee anywhere — the car, the hotel, or your friend's kitchen. It is one of the most practical things I know.
Closing Thought
Cold brew isn't just smooth. It's generous. It's scalable. It's the kind of brewing method that rewards you not just with a great drink, but with time — and that's the rarest thing coffee can give you.
